In 2009, Oscar Grant was shot in the back and killed by a police officer after he was detained by the Bay Area Police, all while bystanders caught the entire incident on camera. The shooting officer, Johannes Mehserle, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2010 but was released from prison in June 2011 after serving part of his 2 year sentence.
Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a movie is in the process of being made on Oscar Grant’s final day before his untimely and controversial death.
The independent film, titled Fruitvale (the train station where Grant was killed), is written and directed by Ryan Coogler, and will have Forest Whitaker as a producer.
Oscar winner Octavia Spencer is currently in talks to play Grant’s mother Wanda Johnson, while “Friday Night Lights” and Red Tails star Michael B. Jordan is in negotiations to play Oscar.
Production for Fruitvale is set to start this summer in northern California.
