Last year, the Lifetime network announced that it would be remaking the classic film Steel Magnolias with an all black cast. Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, Alfre Woodard, Jill Scott, and Adepero Oduye have starring roles in the movie and here is a first look at them in action.
The original movie told the story of 6 women who come together and share a bond:
Supporting each other through their triumphs and tragedies, they congregate at Truvy’s beauty shop to ponder the mysteries of life and death, husbands and children – and hair and nails – all the important topics that bring women together.
The 1989 film starred Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Darryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis. And according to TV Guide:
Latifah will portray M’Lynn, who was played by Sally Field in the original film. Woodard will play Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine), and Rashad will play Clairee (Olympia Dukakis). Additionally, the movie co-stars Jill Scott as Truvy (Dolly Parton), Adepero Oduye as Annelle (Darryl Hannah) and Rashad’s daughter, Condola Rashad, as Shelby (Julia Roberts).
Steel Magnolias will premiere later this year on Lifetime.
