Yesterday, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler announced that he would not be returning for season 12 of “American Idol” as a judge, and today, Jennifer Lopez confirmed rumors that she has also left the show.
For months, speculation has swirled as to whether or not Jennifer would be giving up her judge’s chair to pursue other ventures. In an emotional announcement this morning, she confirmed the news with Idol’s longtime host Ryan Seacrest. (You can listen to the full audio of the interview here.)
“I didn’t know I wold be so moved emotionally by working on the show and working with the contestants. But even last year when I had to make the decision is was super tough. One year was fine, but then to go back and do it again – I have my movies and my music… It gets more complicated. As the kids get bigger, it started feeling like a lot. Something had to give. And that’s where I think I am right now.
“I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do. That I put kind of on hold because I love Idol so much. You have a lot of other responsibilities and you have a lot of other things that you do. I could do Idol for the rest of my life but that would be giving up on a bunch of other things.
“We had an amazing run.”
As for Steven, he released a statement echoing Jennifer’s comments. He also feels it’s time to get back to his music career.
“After some long, hard thoughts, I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit. I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band.
“Idol was over the top fun, and I loved every minute of it,” Tyler added. “Now it’s time to bring rock back.”
Both Jennifer and Steven are going on tour this summer, so they have plenty to keep them busy. But with two judges gone, will Randy Jackson be calling it quits too?
