A night at the movies has turned into a terrible tragedy for the people of Aurora, Colorado.

At the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, a gunman opened fire on a theater full of people, ultimately killing 12 and wounding 38.

According to news reports, the man, now identified as James Holmes, propped open the emergency door of the theater, threw tear gas into the audience, and began strategically shooting. He was later arrested.

Police arrested a man believed to be the shooter in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN.

“He did not resist. He did not put up a fight,” Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said there was no evidence of a second gunman, and FBI spokesman Jason Pack said it did not appear the incident was related to terrorism.

Police say Holmes used 4 different types of guns in the attack: “an ‘AK type’ rifle, a shotgun and two handguns”

The scale of the tragedy continues to rise, as it has been learned the victims range in age from 3 months to 45. Many have been wounded while several people have been listed as being in critical condition.

President Barack Obama, who was informed of the shooting around 5 AM this morning while he was in Florida campaigning, released a statement on behalf of himself and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado. Federal and local law enforcement are still responding, and my Administration will do everything that we can to support the people of Aurora in this extraordinarily difficult time.

We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family.

All of us must have the people of Aurora in our thoughts and prayers as they confront the loss of family, friends, and neighbors, and we must stand together with them in the challenging hours and days to come.
