News outlets have learned that television icon Sherman Hemsley has passed away at the age of 74.
According to People.com, Hemsley passed away at his El Paso, Texas home earlier today. TMZ reports that a nurse, who initially thought he was sleeping, discovered him at the home and immediately called for help.
The cause of his death is not yet known.
Hemsley was most known for his historic role as George Jefferson in the sitcom “The Jeffersons,” which made its TV debut in 1975. Though it was originally a spin off of the popular show “All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons,” led by Hemsley and Isabel Sanford, aired for 10 years and helped stands as the second longest running black sitcom in television history.
