Jennifer Hudson returned to Chicago today to be present for the sentencing of her former brother-in-law William Balfour, the man convicted of murdering her mother, brother, and young nephew.
After a judge denied Balfour’s request to a new trial, the 31 year old was sentenced to 3 consecutive life terms for the murders.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times:
Cook County Judge Charles Burns said William Balfour’s soul is as “barren†as dark space before he handed down the sentence for the October 2008 murders.
He also gave Balfour an additional 120 years in prison for the other crimes tied to the murders.
Burns said he didn’t believe that Balfour had “an ounce of remorse.â€
The sentence came after Balfour offered “condolences and prayers†to the victims’ family and his “deepest sympathies†to Hudson’s nephew, 7-year-old Julian King, declaring, “I still love him.â€
But for Balfour to say he loved Julian, the judge said, is an “insult to all of us.â€
Balfour was convicted in May of the October 2008 murders after a trial in which both Jennifer and her sister Julia Hudson took to the stand to give emotional testimonies.
Continued thoughts and prayers are with their families during this time.
