This post is courtesy of longtime FreesWorld.com reader Thembisa S. Mshaka. Below, she shares the impact Gil Scott-Heron, who she met and worked with, had on her life.
Gil Scott-Heron was called home Friday, May 27, 2011. An iconic creative spirit who left an indelible mark on Black music and indeed the entire world, you’ll read obits about his public accomplishments and contributions. He is indeed a revolutionary. He is the Godfather of Spoken Word. But this piece is about what this amazing Master Teacher taught me during the three years I worked on his behalf. (more…)
Since I’m so biased about the Celtics, I asked @sports_r_me_mp3 to tell you all about the exciting game last night. Thanks Mckenzie for the killer seats.
Splash! Ray Allen hits the game-winning shot to send the Celtics to their first win in this playoff season. But the game didn’t just come down to that play. Plenty of plays led to this exciting ending. Like in any playoff series, heroes will be made and goats will be made as well.
Going into halftime, it seemed like the Knicks had a stranglehold on the game. But as the second half went on, It seemed like the Knicks began to get tighter and tighter. And as the Knicks began to struggle, the Celtics began to find their stride. The Celtics got their offense started from an unlikely source: Jermaine O’Neal. O’Neal had a flashback to his Pacer days as he hit some jumpers and blocked some shots. Ray Allen began to get into it some when he hit a three-pointer and then a driving layup. The lead was getting smaller and smaller as the game headed into the 4th quarter. That’s when Amar’e Stoudamire decided it was his time to takeover.
Amar’e started to put the Knicks on his back as he was taking Kevin Garnett at will. The highlight of that stretch was his facial he served to Jermaine O’Neal and Garnett. It looked like the Knicks had stemmed the tide. But then, some things changed the outlook of the game and quite possibly the series. (more…)
Check out the Tennessee Titan’s own Rennie Curran as he shares his thoughts on the NFL lockout:
They tried and tried to get it all worked out, but now, its lockout time. The owners opted out of this deal a few years ago with a lockout in mind. The NFLPA decided to decertify today and in turn the NFL owners are going to lockout the players. This isn’t looking good. The owners wouldn’t show the players their books so the players could understand why the owners wanted certain things.
This whole thing is about money. The owners want the players to play 18 games, make them more money all the while they want to cut down monies given to the players because of supposed funds that they are losing. But my question for the owners is where’s the proof of that? The NFL has been thriving for years and I haven’t seen any slowing of revenue. I personally think the owners just feel that they were giving too much to the players and they wanted to get that power back in the terms of money. Well, because of the shot they fired first with opting out of the deal, the NFLPA decided to decertify and now there’s a lockout.
Where the owners are wrong is they are putting their greed ahead of the product. The NFL is the most popular league in the world and they make more money than anyone. So, for the owners to think that the players are going to take a blind leap of faith that the owners are losing money and take the cut makes no sense. These rich owners got rich by spending less and saving more, not spending and not saving. But in this instance, they are dead wrong.
Now I’m sure that there may be some key points that I have missed, but the only thing I can say for sure is that I’m tired of this bickering back and forth and I wish that both sides would just come to an agreement and get this over with. The owners still haven’t realized that their greed is what has caused this lockout situation. Now with all that being said, I still think that we will not be missing any football at the beginning of the NFL football season. If there is football missed, then the NFL will incur serious damage to its popularity. Get it done for your fans NFL owners and players or this picture below will be what graces the cover of Madden 12.

A FreesWorld.com reader wrote in to discuss the recent ThatsAbortion.com ad in New York. Read Thembisa S. Mshaka’s letter and leave your thoughts below.
Free,
I have been in advertising and marketing communications for over 12 years. As a writer of numerous campaigns across categories from pro-social to entertainment, I understand the impact words and images are designed to make in the form of advertising. I want to examine all that is wrong with this ad:
Copy: “The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb.†The headline is designed to grab your attention. It certainly does that—but it also maligns African American expectant mothers and infers that the Black female body is toxic and to be feared, when in fact the womb is the seminal, most natural place in the world for any child of any mother. Now Black women’s wombs are more dangerous than urban streets, than corrupt police, than semi-automatic weapons, than drugs?! The headline seems to work counter to the overall message, which is that they want to prevent abortions. If that’s so, then what’s so scary about a pregnant Black woman? Ohhh, the fact that she might be in control of her own reproductive system; that she would make an informed choice of her own volition. Now I get it. (more…)
Wouldn’t it be great if everyone took a moment to contemplate the truth of the statement: “You come in to this world with nothing, you leave it with nothing.” It would certainly counter the notion that he who dies with the most toys wins.

Here’s another edition of the upcoming FreeSpeech section of FreesWorld.com. A FreesWorld reader, who wishes to remain anonymous, sent the following letter about a recent airport TSA experience:
Let me start by saying I was the first person saying, “Hey, the new airline travel TSA procedures are in place for safety and if you don’t like it, don’t fly.” I drank the TSA PR spin Kool-Aid. I am warning you not to do the same.
Early last week, I was traveling and ended up in the line with the scanner which was very short compared to the other security lines. In the effort to save time I went into the line with the scanner. I empty out every item in my pocket, and my shoes, belt, watches all taken off. Go in the scanner for about 3 seconds and exit, no problem, right? WRONG! (more…)
As we will soon be launching the FreeSpeech section of FreesWorld.com with hopes of giving a voice to the people to discuss whatever they want, we thought we’d warm you up with a letter sent in by a loyal FreesWorld reader, Asha:
After years of supporting Victoria’s Secret through thousands of dollars spent on clothes and lingerie from their catalogs and hours spent online and in the stores, I can honestly say that I am one of their most loyal fans.
However, after viewing the runway show last night on CBS, I was very disappointed in the number of women who looked as if they had been almost starving themselves to fit old and misrepresented stereotypes of women who don’t fit the same look the catalog represents.
Some of the models I’ve seen over and over again in the catalog are healthy, vivacious women who inspire me to stay fit and sexy as much as I can. But Tuesday night, I felt that Victoria’s Secret perpetuated a deceitful version of what I had been viewing in your catalogs through the years. I think you’ve taken steps backwards to reintroduce our public with the falsity that women have to have rail thin arms and barely there thighs to walk the runway. (more…)
